bauer revival 02

Built: 2021

In 1956 Edwin Bauer created a small tropical oasis in the middle of Makiki that provided residents with the feeling of tropical immersion despite its location in a dense urban center. This units new design made use of the existing material by careful deconstruction. These materials were then categorized, and used to complete the new layout. This helped to reduce waste and became a story of the units life-cycle. All mill work and furniture were designed and built to reflect the evolving needs of the owners

Not as well known as other Edwin Bauer buildings built in the same style and of the same period, the Oahuan takes the cluster arrangement from his Waikiki hotels and turns it into residences for Hawaii’s growing population. Incorporating his typical Bauer plan and use of local materials, the Oahuan is both Modern, and uniquely of its place and time. Now it is a time capsule of 1950’s Makiki, and an ideal place to live for up and coming professionals.
