dingbat 02

Unbuilt: 2023

After a rainy day walk through the Honolulu neighborhood of Makiki, an idea came together. Taking some of the most interesting parts and pieces from some of the districts most distinctive dingbats, this design study came together. Large, concrete, upside-down triangles lift the building up to provide parking underneath. A diagonal offset in the apartments creates privacy between each unit, but also larger floor area, and a zig-zagging open-air corridor on the outside of the building. The brutalist aesthetic from the different types of poured-in-place concrete weathers in the rain and is offset by the lush tropical landscaping. In keeping with the brutalist / 1970s look, a prefabricated stainless steel kitchen unit is placed in every unit. All together, its a fun, moody, look at how to design in a uniquely Makikian urban context.
